With their 17th album off the Lab Off Sessions, The Jazz Jousters come back for a One Night’s Stay with the sultry American jazz singer Nancy Wilson. Sampling “Theme From Hotel,” taken off her 1967 “Welcome to my Love” album released via Capitol Records, One Night’s Stay employs 13 tracks from beat-maker scholars Es-K, Blue Buttonz, RickMal, Gadget, Mr. Moods, Jaze Baqti, Ja:Kova, Skinnista, SmokedBeat, B 3 N B i, Bones the Beat Head, and newcomers Pigeondust and KNYT.
Born in Chillicothe, Ohio on February 20 (tomorrow), 1937, Nancy Wilson’s career span of 57 years (and counting) has produced and released 70 solo albums with legendary labels – Capitol Records, Blue Note, MCG Jazz, and Columbia to name a few. During the 60s and 70s she would release three or more albums in one year periods, for example – in 1963 she released four LPs: Broadway – My Way, Hollywood – My Way, Yestersday’s Love Songs/Today’s Blues, and How Glad Am I – her work ethic matched the traits and qualities of other great and famous jazz legends who The Jazz Jousters have had the courtesy of paying tribute. She went onto release multiple LP from 1965-1972.
On a NPR Jazz Profile segment, NRP went as far as labeling her an “all-around performer” due to her numerous entertainment industry engagements, such as her show – The Nancy Wilson Show which earned her an Emmy Award, or the recurring roles in TV show The Cosby Show and Sinbad. Her 2004 R.S.V.P and 2006 Turned to Blue (70th album) LPs each earned her a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. The NPR profile announced that she has retired from touring but continues to “perform select engagements and to record.”
Stay tuned for a special tribute to Donald Byrd – the 18th session due March 3rd via Millennium Jazz Music.
